The constellation consists of 20 stars visible to the naked eye, and is shaped like a crown of jewels.
Associated with this constellation is the story of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete. Minos built a labyrinth under his palace, and the Minotaur lived in the labyrinth. The monster fed on the people of Athens, offered as a sacrifice. Theseus, the son of the king of Athens, decided to kill the monster and he was to be helped by Ariadne, who was in love. She offered him a sword and a ball of thread to help him find his way through the maze. The mission was successful and Theseus escaped with Ariadne, on a ship she had prepared. Theseus, however, proved disloyal and abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos. The distraught girl met and married the god Dionysus there. As a wedding gift, she received a golden diadem made by Hephaestus. After her death, this gift was transferred to the sky in the form of stars.
